Early Years

Sessions

Our Pre-school pupils may attend either morning or afternoon sessions, with the option to stay for lunch. Full days are also normally available.

Pre-school session times are as follows:

  • Morning session: 8.45am - 11.45am

  • Lunch: 11.45am - 12.15pm

  • Afternoon session: 12.15pm - 3.30pm

Our Reception pupils attend five compulsory mornings per week from 8.30am - 12.30pm, including lunchtime. We also offer afternoon sessions each day from 12.30pm-3.30pm which are optional for those not of compulsory school age.

Please note, if attending a lunch time session, parents will need to provide a packed lunch, including a piece of fruit. Each child will also receive 200ml of milk daily as per the government milk scheme. Drinking water is readily available throughout the day.

Curriculum

In the Early Years, we aim to prepare children for full-time learning in the main school by developing their foundational skills. We use the Early Years Foundation Stage framework to help the children develop in the following areas:

  • Communication and language

  • Personal, social and emotional development

  • Physical development

  • Mathematics

  • Literacy

  • Understanding the world around them

  • Expressive arts and design

In Reception the children use the Twinkl Phonics Programme. The children learn the letter sounds and blends necessary to be able to read and write words and sentences, as well as some common irregular words.

Alongside this, children learn basic maths skills through the use of White Rose Maths. The children also develop their learning around different topics during the year.

By the end of Reception, we would normally expect children to meet the early learning goals of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Extra-curricular Activities

The children enjoy a weekly trip to a local park, which offers wonderful opportunities for their physical development. They also visit the Forest School during the year, where they can explore, build dens, experience outdoor story-telling, and even savour snacks from the camp fire! Other local visits include trips to Windsor Library and other nearby places of interest.

Learning Journeys

At The King’s House School, Windsor we use an online journal called Arc Pathway in order to assess each child’s learning journey. This journal is also used by parents to share home experiences and developmental milestones with their child’s key worker, so that we truly partner in our responsibility for maximising the potential of each child.

Facilities

For our Early Years Centre, we have a beautiful timber-frame building set in our garden area to accommodate our Pre-School and Reception classes. The Centre enjoys direct access to the outdoor play area where the children can continue their learning outside the classroom.
